Minister of Home Affairs
Ion Marcel VELA assumed office as Minister of Home Affairs on the 5th of November 2019.
Previously, he has been a senator within the Romanian Senate since 2016, holding the position of Secretary of Permanent Office, President of the Defence Commission and Member of the Interparliamentary Union.
Prior to his work as a member of the Romanian Parliament he held several administrative positions and responsibilities.
Starting with 1992 until 1996 he was Vicemayor of Caransebes County. Between 1996 until 2000 he was local counselor in the same town hall. As from 2000 to 2001 he’s been appointed as Prefect.
In 2004 he was elected Mayor of Caransebes, position that he held until 2016.
He graduated Law and Polytechnic Institute.
